The Tapir - Belize National Animal
In 1981 the Biards tapir was declared the National Animal of Belize.
The tapir is known asMountain Cow and are the largest land mammalsthatdwell in
the rainforest properties in Belize.
Although it is called mountain cow, this creature has no relations with cows
but in fact the tapir is related to the horse and also kin to rhinoceros but
are shaped like a pig.
These dusty brown mammals are chubbily built with short legs
and dumpy nose trunk. They have a white fringe around the eyes and lips and its

patches of fur on the throat and chest. A tapir is almost the size of a donkey
but weights up to 600 pounds and thus the name of “Danto” in Spanish.
Tapirs
